Spring means many things to people but to us it means the birding year truly kicks off. The quiet gloomy winter months can feel so long, as birds shelter from the elements, but the waiting is worthwhile when you hear the first songs of spring. Give yourself an extra reason to look forward to spring and play today.
By the time Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs start arriving in early March our community will already be out in the field monitoring and recording the resident birds. Spring is an incredibly important time for our surveys. Recorded sightings increase as birdwatchers get out in the good weather, helping to identify the changing patterns of departing and arriving migrants.
Our volunteer ringers and nest recorders will be carefully studying bird behaviour, watching for the subtle signs of breeding and nest building ready to collect data about this critical part of our birds’ life cycles. As courtship begins the BTO/JNCC/RSPB Breeding Bird Survey starts, with volunteers gathering data which will later tell us how both resident and visiting migrant birds are faring. At the same time the Nest Record Scheme participants monitor the first nesting attempts of the season.
Spring is an amazing time of year, full of life and hope for the year ahead. Buy your tickets today and support a better future for our birds.
